APPEARANCE : Perennial herb, stems woody at the base, to 0.60 m tall or sprawling. 'Seeds' surmounted by two stiff barbed awns. Almost hairless. Leaves mainly in a basal rosette, a few alternating up the stems. Basal leaves 1–12 cm long, 5-50 mm wide, green above, glaucous below, hairless, sometimes undivided and linear, usually deeply divided into narrow segments. Stem leaves becoming smaller and linear higher up the stem. Flower heads 5–8 mm in diameter overall, with 5 to about 20 toothed yellow 'petals', or with 0 'petals', and yellow centres with 7–12 florets. Flower heads single.
